Old-Time musicians near and far descend on the grounds of Hagood Mill to compete in this official State-sanctioned two-day event. There will be lots of other things to see on September 20-21 as Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folklife and traditional-arts demonstrations. There will be blacksmithing, bowl-digging, flint-knapping, chair-caning, moonshining, broom-making, basket making, pottery, quilting, spinning, knitting, weaving, woodcarving, metalsmithing, beekeeping, bobbin lace, and leatherworking demonstrations and much more! We encourage visitors to ask questions of the artists, gain insight, and if you wish, spend a little money to secure a Traditional Arts treasure of your own. As always, we encourage visitors to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the show. Visitors are also welcome to bring their favorite old-time instruments and join in the “open jam” which typically takes place throughout the day under the ancient cedar beside our beloved 1791 log cabin. The Centerpiece of the Hagood Mill Historic Site is the water-powered 1845 gristmill. It is one of the finest examples of nineteenth-century technology in the Upcountry and operates just as it has for the last century and a half. The mill will be running throughout the day. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground cornmeal, grits, and wheat flour will be available. In addition, rye flour, Basmati rice flour, oat flour, oatmeal, popping cornmeal and grits, organic yellow corn meal and grits, and buckwheat flour are produced and may be available. Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill-related items are also available. There promises to be lots to do and lots of fun! There is a $5.00 parking fee for the day but admission is FREE to the Hagood Mill Historic Site as well as to the Hagood Creek Petroglyph Site. All proceeds from parking help offset the costs at Hagood Mill. So, head on out, grab a helping of tasty food, served on site from some of the best food trucks in the area, and as always, enjoy your special day at Hagood Mill. The Hagood Mill Historic Site is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. year round. The Mill operates, rain or shine, the third Saturday of every month. Little Roy & Lizzy at the Opera House @ Abbeville Opera House
Sep 27 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Little Roy & Lizzy at the Opera House @ Abbeville Opera House | Abbeville | South Carolina | United States
Join the City of Abbeville at the Abbeville Opera House for an amazing Bluegrass Performance featuring the Little Roy and Lizzy Show! Having roots in the heart of the south, Elizabeth Long, or Lizzy as her friends and fans know her was born on a farm in Lincolnton, Georgia. She began her music accomplishment at an early age and her interests are very eclectic ranging from Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn to the Earl Scruggs Revue to Fleetwood Mac. While starting out on the piano, Lizzy soon took up the fiddle, guitar, autoharp, bass, banjo, and mandolin, and has become an accomplished musician, alternating between these instruments as part of her entertainment repertoire. Continuing her quest for success, Lizzy has paired up with Little Roy Lewis from the legendary Lewis Family. Lizzy finds that singing helps to express her thoughts and emotions—whether happy, sad, disappointed or angry—and, in her own words, “I don’t have to answer why, why not or even when….I can let it just flow”, and her extraordinary voice shimmers with strains of America’s musical roots. Lizzy has been nominated for three Dove Awards and has won several fiddle and talent contests. Little Roy summed it up the best, “pull a plank off the wall and she’ll play it!” Little Roy – Banjo, Guitar, Crazy, etc… Little Roy is awfully hard to overlook. He makes sure that no one in the audience gets bored at any time. Little Roy has won awards as Entertainer as well as for his banjo playing. Little Roy learned to play banjo when he was only six years old, and won a local talent contest for his playing when he was eight. Little Roy’s favorite banjo players are Don Reno and Earl Scruggs. USA Today called Little Roy ‘a banjo master, truly a picker’s picker’. Little Roy can also be found playing the guitar and autoharp. In fact, the song ‘Good Time Get-Together’ was written to highlight his instrumental skills. Little Roy is multi-talented – he sings, plays many instruments, tells stories, and acts. When you see this Duo, you are sure to notice Little Roy, and he’ll make you smile.
